I found this pic of AVH with his snare taped up. It's possible I could be wrong, but I defintely remember seeing his anre taped up like that.

SInce I don't have the interview he did back in the 80's, I don't know if he talked about his sound. Of course, it could be the result of studio trickery. his drums sounded killer on fair Warning.
